When a person who's been convicted of a crime is severely injured prior to going to prison, what will be done?

If someone is convicted and sentenced to prison, but they are not yet in prison, what is done when that person is severely injured close to the date they are to be imprisoned? Are they taken out of the hospital and put in a prison hospital ward? Or are they left in the hospital which admitted them till they are somewhat recovered?
